You want to play your part in ensuring local schools retain their unique character and support their local community the way they know best. You enjoy being part of a team, sharing your skills and experience to support education leaders navigate a financially and politically challenging landscape.

Who are we?

The Learning for Life Trust is a growing Multi-Academy Trust (the “Trust”) responsible for the educational provision at both Broughton Primary School, Broughton, Cockermouth School, Cockermouth and Fairfield Primary School, Cockermouth. Our vision is to create a partnership of schools collaborating to bring out the very best in each other, ensuring every pupil reaches their full potential. We believe our schools are in the best position to understand their community’s needs and therefore support the retention of each school’s unique character. To achieve this, the Trustees consider it vital to retain governors at a local level whose focus is centred exclusively on the individual schools. Our Trust is ambitious, and we are expanding. We therefore need to support development by recruiting additional Trustees.

What do the roles involve?

Those involved with governance:

  • Establish the vision, ethos and strategic direction of the Trust (Trustees) or the school (Local Governors).
  • Hold the executive leaders (Trustee) or Head Teacher (Local Governor) to account for the educational performance of the organisation and the performance management of staff.
  • Oversee the financial performance of the organisation making sure money is well spent.
  • Ensuring the voices of stakeholders (pupils, parents, staff, local community) are heard.

Local Governor: Those involved at this level will develop a closer relationship with one school and it’s Headteacher with opportunities to explore areas of interest directly with staff and pupil

Trustees: You will oversee all the schools within the Trust, working with the Executive Leadership team.

Time commitment: Expect 6 board meetings with around 3 additional sub-meetings during the academic year (evening meetings). Hybrid arrangements involving virtual attendance is possible.

Experience/skills: The Trust is looking to recruit people with experience in any of the following areas: Executive management; Business and strategy development; Safeguarding and SEND; Accountancy/finance/budget management; Premises management; Human Resources; Legal. We will provide induction and training to support you in your role.
